By a quirky set of circumstances – I didn’t know the precise wording of the law, I ran into some extremely mean people, and the police had absolutely no concern for me at all – I was charged and arrested for criminal harassment. The shock and reality of those events was completely overwhelming and extremely hurtful. For a very brief time I didn’t know what to do but I knew I had to do something and fast.
Fortunately, I had worked with a reputable family lawyer (at LLF) in the past, in Peterborough, and I called her hoping for a referral to a local and skilled criminal defence lawyer. Essentially, I trusted her and I wanted her to give me the name of a lawyer she trusted. She gave me two names and I immediately phoned the first one she recommended: I called and left a message for Richard Aitken with the firm Aitken Robertson.
Within just a very few minutes, Mr. Aitken returned my call and gave me solid and reassuring advice about what to do and what to expect. From that first telephone conversation with Richard, and because I learned that he has over three decades of legal experience, I believed that I would be properly and expertly defended. As soon as I retained Mr. Aitken as my lawyer, I began to feel like I was gaining some say and some control in my legal dilemma. Knowing that he would represent me without me having to be present in court was also a huge relief. No one can guarantee you victory, but being on the path to success is the first, best step.
In dealing with Mr. Aitken and his colleagues, this is what I learned. From my first call to his office, I found him and his staff to be reliable and prompt in getting back to me. Each person, including Richard, consistently and punctually followed through with all arrangements and communications that were planned. I was never left hanging or disappointed with what someone was supposed to do. I was also very appreciative of the fact that I could email Mr. Aitken at any time and often I received his replies in short order. I mention this, particularly, because I did communicate with him after hours and on weekends and I know that I was not ignored. This is all very important because even to this day (because of the pandemic) I have not met Richard Aitken but he has been there for me every step of the way in real time, and especially when I needed him or had something to share. I cannot emphasize this enough: I was under tremendous stress facing the uncertainty of a fair judicial outcome, yet with Mr. Aitken’s ongoing involvement and support the whole process was bearable.
My central desire here is say that I have no hesitation whatsoever in putting forth Mr. Richard Aitken’s name, and firm, should one require an experienced and attentive criminal defence team. He is a person with real commitment who believes that you should fight the charges to secure your best possible outcome. I know that firsthand. Every person I had contact or communication with in his Peterborough office has been courteous, professional, and empathetic. I never felt uncomfortable in their presence or with their communications when dealing with the circumstances of my case. It was very self satisfying to me to be treated so respectfully when, in fact, Richard’s offices serve a wide area including Belleville, Kingston, Peterborough, and Oshawa.
The bottom line is that I was mired in a very indecent situation in which certain people wanted me to be guilty of the charge against me. I might have been, had it not been for Richard Aitken, a man I found to be decent, respected, hard working, and experienced in criminal law. At the outset, I wanted a lawyer who I could trust. I wanted a lawyer who would listen to me and take my side. I wanted a lawyer I could rely on and to be there for me when others were against me. I got all of that when I retained Richard Aitken and his colleagues to act on my behalf.
My assessment of Mr. Aitken and his team is honest, factual, and genuine. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have retained his legal services.
I was not convicted of the charge against me.
Having recently needed specialized legal advice and representation, we were fortunate to have found the Aitken Robertson Firm.
Ours was an exceptionally sensitive matter and we were most uncomfortable, to say the least. We were treated with solid respect, dignity and expertise by each staff member we encountered.
My first phone call was to Susan Corbett, who instantly put me at ease, and continued her kind patience through many emails and our countless questions. Thank you Susie; we needed that.
All other staff of the firm worked tirelessly for us during our heartbreak and fear. All of this they managed SUCCESSFULLY under duress of Covid-19 restrictions and other barriers.
Today our case was resolved and we are beyond thrilled at their success. A more favourable outcome we could not have hoped for!
We thank you all for your dedication, compassion and true EXPERTISE.
We highly recommend (whatever the situation) others benefit through their work and lead to success.
If you’re looking for the best in the business don’t hesitate to get in touch with Aitken Robertson.
A Very Happy Family today!!!
“I was charged with impaired boating. If I lost, Crown was asking for 4 months in jail and a lifetime driving ban. My lawyer Richard Aitken was able to convince the Crown in a plea bargain to instead accept careless boating for no jail, a $350 fine, and a donation by me. I don’t even think my insurance will go up. The fees are fair. The lawyer did everything for me in relation to Court stuff which made easy to me. I am so happy with the result. It will not affect my commuting to work, looking after family etc.” -L.V.
“First, and most importantly, I must thank Aitken Robertson and Richard Aitken for his hard work on my impaired by drugs case. To be specific, Mr. Aitken did a superb job cross-examining the doctor, highlighting his inconsistencies, forcing a key admission and, in the final analysis, weakening his credibility. His success was well reflected in the final judgment.
Furthermore, Mr. Aitken’s strong recommendation to fight on (at a crucial point when I was losing faith in the justice system) gave me hope and allowed me to experience victory. His overall discretion and efficiency turned out to be brilliant. Admittedly, there were times when I second-guessed Mr. Aitken, when I thought more could be said. However, in the end he made all the right calls and said what needed to be said! This approach contrasted sharply with the Crown’s painfully long and slow ramblings that often amounted to much ado about nothing.
In the end, I have come to admire Mr. Aitken’s professional acumen greatly and all of the lawyers at Aitken Robertson.”
I had a very public and difficult legal situation to deal with and Richard and his team handled it with professionalism from our initial meeting right through until the matter was closed (19 months later). I was given practical advice that proved to be exactly what I needed in order to get a best case outcome. Highly recommended.
“I was faced with several criminal charges, and dealing with substance abuse issues for which I am receiving treatment. During this time I had to be off work. Aitken Robertson have always been very understanding and supportive during this very difficult time and I felt very comfortable speaking to all members of the team. I was allowed to reduce my payments whilst in treatment. All the staff have always treated me with respect and dignity and I would recommend the services of Richard Aitken and his team to anyone facing criminal charges.”
“It’s never a nice feeling having to choose a criminal defence lawyer, but a quick google search will show the team at Aitken and Robertson to have the highest ratings in the Oshawa area.
I was able to meet directly with Richard himself within a week of my first call to the office. He was professional and was able to alleviate many worries I had about my charges. Richard set some realistic goals based on previous cases he worked. Over the next couple weeks, Richard and his team reached a deal beyond my initial expectation.
My matter was ended within 6 weeks of receiving the charges. I only had to make one appearance and the team took care of the rest. I’d like to give a special thanks to Richard, Madeline, and the team of paralegals that worked on my case. They achieved the best possible outcome and I cannot thank them enough.
I truly hope I don’t find myself needing his services again, but I’d 100% recommend these guys to anyone who finds themselves in a difficult legal situation.”
“I was charged with over 80 in December last year in Ajax. I hired Richard Aitken in Aitken Robertson. I was very relieved when I got careless. The price is very reasonable for the charge. The firm’s staff is very pleasant, friendly and always available for questions I had. When I was charged I was very stressed. Richard Aitken put my mind at ease and addressed the situation in clear, and professional manner.”
“I work as a brick layer and my truck is important to my line of work. I was charged with operating a motor vehicle with over 80mg [of alcohol] in 2016. I decided to get a lawyer to help save my licence and my friend Coreen, who is a paralegal, recommended Richard Aitken to help my case. I was hoping to get it reduced to a careless but it was not offered. Because of that, I decided to take it to trial. At trial, the judge found that the police didn’t give me my breath demand as soon as they could or my right to counsel. As well, the police did not properly assist me in calling a lawyer from the station. Because my rights were breached, the judge would not consider my breath reading so I won my case. Even though Mr. Aitken’s office was four hours away, he did not charge me for mileage or travel time. He offered monthly payment plans which helped me out a lot. Mr. Aitken was very professional and always explained the outcome and procedure with me throughout the case.” .

“I was charged with blood alcohol over 0.8 in Oshawa, Ontario. It is the first that I have been charged or arrested. After doing a lot on-line research I found Aitken Robertson. The reviews were excellent, so I contacted the hotline. I had an immediate response in 15 minutes. They were professional, quick and responsive and they ended up getting my charge reduced. I would recommend their services to anybody.”
“I was charged with over 80 in Pickering, Ontario and the matter was brought up in Oshawa Court. Richard Aitken of Aitken Robertson was able to get that reduced to a careless driving traffic ticket and $500 fine. I am very happy with the result as I avoided criminal conviction and it doesn’t affect my career. The price was fair for the result I obtained. I would highly recommend the firm.”
“I was charged with Over 80 this year. I was concerned about a criminal record, losing driver’s licence and job, etc. I googled and found Aitken Robertson. Had free consultation and retained their services. I was never criminally charged before. I was very happy with the result and getting a careless with will not affect my criminal record and I will be able to drive. I will recommend anyone charged with DUI to Aitken Robertson.”
“I was arrested at 6:30 PM on Sunday night (Mischief CCC430) and I was in Richards office at 2:00 PM the next day. Less than 24 hrs. I was a mess, absolutely petrified and had a very hard time trying to stay focused. Richard told me to go home and not to worry, “you aren’t a criminal and we’ll get the charges dropped.” He made me feel safe and secure. I had the costs and all the information I needed. They work in teams so you can always call and get information. Result was exactly what Richard said but LESS than the quoted price. When does that ever happen! Special thanks to Jay for all her patience and help. She is a great asset to the firm.”
“Richard Aitken represented me in an impaired driving matter in a most professional manner. I would recommend his experience and services without reservation. His guidance and efforts helped me get an acquittal against overwhelming adversities.”
“I was facing an Over 80 charge. They said I was twice the legal limit. I had a prior impaired conviction 5 or 6 years ago. My career and lifestyle were on the line. After meeting with three other lawyers, I was referred to Richard. I received immediate respect, hope and confidence. Richard and his team seemed to have the Crown on their heels from the outset. I must say I was maybe not a perfect client either. I came away from this experience with a lesson learned and a perfect driving record. All charges dropped.”
“On November 16th, 2010 I made a call to Richard Aitken’s office, not knowing what I was up against for a charge that I truly did not understand.
It was the best call I have ever made! The prompt service was absolutely amazing in regards to my questions, as well the availability to help me in a prompt matter. Once I made the call they were right there the same day to give me advice as to what was best. They were acting on my behalf the very next day in court for a bail hearing.
Being that it has never happened to me before, I had many questions in regards to my charges. I was very confused, upset to say the least, anxious to find all the answers to all of my questions.
They re-assured me that they would do their very best. There was a lot of information needed from me, many different appointments in order for them to understand my defence.
I had many different court appearances to attend and they always made sure I was not facing any of them alone.
When it is your first time contacting a lawyer for charges against you, you become extremely anxious. I had to put all my trust into them in which was extremely hard since it was my first time facing this. Throughout the months awaiting trial, Richard had advised me that an articling student would be helping with the file. Again I became extremely nervous wondering how things would end. My case was then handed to Richard along side. As we awaited trial for almost a year, this team worked hard to prove my innocence, until almost the very last week before trial. It was then that all of my anxiety came out in tears as they called me in to the office to announce that all my charges had been dropped. This case was a very tricky case in many senses. Leaving the matter in their hands left me with the most satisfaction, appreciation and trust in this firm. They all have lots of patience including their secretaries. Any questions you may have, no worries, they will answer them the best they can. Believe me if anyone has tested them on questions it would have to be me. They are understanding about payments, as long as you make an effort to pay every month. They are here to help you; that is what they do. That being said, they do need to be paid for their services which are very well priced.
If anyone reading this is unsure what law firm to use when looking for a team to represent them, I highly recommend you put your trust into this firm. They have touched my life in more ways than I could ever put in words.
All the best. You won’t regret taking my advice!!”
“My name is C. I’m a 40 year old man with a full time career, a loving wife and 3 wonderful children. In the spring of 2011, my life was turned upside down when I was criminally charged with “Failure to Provide a Breath Sample”. Unbenouned to me at the time, the charge comes with very heavy implications, the same as if one were charged with DUI or impaired.
All of a sudden my life was turned inside out, I was completely devastated. The implications could have cost me thousands in fines, thousands in insurance, license suspensions and possibly my career as a professional ******* ******* with the federal government. I was completely lost and didn’t know where to turn.
After a few calls, a good friend recommended me to Richard Aitken. After speaking with Mr Aitken, I was re-assured that there were heavy implications to the charge, but he wasted no time in reviewing my case and working diligently on our defense. Mr Aitken’s review of the case and questioning to the prosecution produced an excellent outcome, whereas the criminal charge was dropped by the Crown.
I can’t put into words how greatful I am to Mr Aitken. The amount of stress I suffered during this ordeal was like none other I’ve experienced. A special thanks to all the folks at Aitken Robertson for their excellent advice, their time, their correspondence and their diligent teamwork.
These folks are the paradigm of professionalism and I would highly recommend them to anyone whom finds themselves in an undersireable position such as I was.
Thank You Richard!! And thanks to ALL the folks at Aitken Robertson!!”
“On August 19, 2014, I was charged with possession of an illegal drug in the City of Whitby, Ontario. I contact Mr. Aitken right away regarding the matter. We discussed the matter over the phone, where he presented me with my options. I told him what I wanted, which he said was possible. The Crown was looking for a guilty plea with a fine but Mr. Aitken was able to have the fines dropped to nothing and my case was then withdrawn by the Crown. I do find that Mr. Aitken’s rates were fair for the matter that was presented. I would refer this law firm anytime.”
“On New Years Eve 2012 , I was out celebrating with friends. One thing led to another I was charged with Care and Control and Impaired Driving. I hired Richard Aitken as my lawyer which turned out to be the best decision I ever made. He was never off the mark and I would recommend him to anyone needing a lawyer. I was acquitted at trial and could continue on with my driving career. Then again in 2014 I found myself needing legal help again so I contacted Aitken Robertson. Richard handled my charge of Assault causing Bodily Harm. He struck a deal with the Crown resulting in an outcome of no criminal record.”
“I was charged with assault in Uxbridge, Ontario and I hired Mr. Richard Aitken as my lawyer. My representation was superior in a professional manner, strongly based on company integrity, with open means of communication which extended to all individuals employed by Aitken Robertson. The time-frame and quoted priced was in line with the proposed amount.
The result, by contrast, exceeded my dreams. I received 12 months probation. This result has re-established my faith in the Justice System. In all fairness, I knew my lawyer was very professional but I was unsure of how the results would turn out.
The Crown was seeking a severe penalty, which included an 18 month suspension and a criminal record. In the end, I was honest and honesty prevailed – right is right. Thanks for your assistance!”
“I was charged in Port Perry, Ontario with Impaired Driving and Over 80 mg in June of 2014. Mr. Richard Aitken was the lawyer that dealt with my case. Due to my prior three DUI convictions, the Crown was seeking a prison term somewhere in the range of 60 days. Richard was able to get it reduced down to house arrest, a 5-year driving suspension and 3 years probation. Richard was knowledgeable and did not leave any of my questions unanswered or leave me confused. Aitken Robertson was very professional and fairly expedited and I would recommend them to anyone.”
“Recently, while travelling on Hwy 401 near Whitby, I was charged with driving while suspended. This was very traumatic. I was very unsure of my future. The arresting officer suggested that jail time was a very good possibility. Through investigations, I was directed to Aitken Robertson Criminal Lawyers. I met with Mr. Aitken and from our first meeting, he guided me through the entire process. He was helpful, straightforward and continued to remind me of my options. It was suggested the I plead guilty.
The entire Aitken Robertson Team always treated me with professional courtesy. Mr. Aitken, confirmed that jail time would be requested from the Crown and I did plead guilty. During sentencing, the crown did ask for jail time and a further suspension but Mr. Aitken asked for a one year driving suspension and a fine. Ultimately, Her Honour agreed.
I am very thankful for the efforts put into my case by this team. The fees are very reasonable and worth every penny.”
“I was charged with impaired driving and over 80 in August 2014. Richard Aitken took on my case personally because I was facing these charges for a second time. Most concerning, I was facing a minimum 30 day jail penalty. Richard was able to avert the jail penalty, allowing me to keep my children, job and home. Although I continue to face all other penalties and very heavy financial/emotional burdens, amongst other difficulties, it could have been much worse but for Richard Aitken’s efforts and diligence with the Crown Attorney. I am very grateful.”
“In the Fall of 2012 I was charged with over 80 and impaired driving. I was facing serious financial burden and a compromised ability to best support my young family should I had been convicted. This was also my first brush with the law as I had zero experience with the criminal code, so I felt hopelessly in way over my head. In the end I’m glad I called Aitken Robertson. As it turns out, certain details surrounding the event were crucial to determining the legality of my arrest and detainment in the first place. I never would have considered these factors on my own, it simply would never have occurred to me. Perhaps like the average Joe, I had completely taken for granted my basic rights and due process as carefully set out in our legal system. And this is precisely why it was the right choice to trust a professional, Richard Aitken, with my case. Mr. Aitken and his associates guided me through the process with utmost concern and professionalism. With Mr. Aitken’s defense, the judge dismissed the case as the detainment was found to be unlawful. I can keep my spotless record and get on with life.”
