Behind the scenes, each of our lawyers are supported by a team of over twenty lawyers, paralegals, clerks, administrators and students, including direct guidance from the firm’s founder, Richard Aitken, who has over 35 years of criminal defence experience.
Aitken Robertson prides itself on providing affordable and transparent legal services. We believe someone’s financial situation should not prevent them from hiring experienced criminal defence lawyers for support. That is why we gladly offer a flat fee billing system, so clients know the full cost of their defence before they decide to hire us. We are also willing to work with clients to design individualized interest free payment plans, so that the fee can be covered over a period of time instead of all at once.

Frequently Asked Questions
First, meet with one of our lawyers for a free 30-minute consultation. We will discuss the case, the evidence, the potential outcomes and the costs. If you choose to retain us, you will pay a portion of the costs up front, and we will begin appearing in court on your behalf. We will meet with the Crown Attorney, review the evidence they have, and begin researching potential caselaw and Charter breaches that could support your defence. Throughout this process we will keep you updated so that you can make informed decisions about how you want to proceed. Ultimately, we will provide you with sound advice so you can make the best decisions for you. The remainder of our fees are paid afterwards, either all at once or over an agreed upon period of time to make the payment easier for you.
Once you have hired us, we will be right there in the court room with you. If there is something you do not know, we will explain it to you, so you remain completely aware of what is going on at all times. Often you will not even need to go to court, we can go on your behalf, saving you time and stress. If you have any specific questions about court attire or manners feel free to ask us, we would be happy to help you be as comfortable throughout the process as possible.
Right next door to our Markham office you’ll find both a Chinese and a sushi restaurant.
Aitken Robertson recognizes that hiring a criminal defence lawyer can be a stressful enough process without factoring in having to pay legal fees. If you are in a difficult financial situation, we will work with you to design a payment plan that allows you to fund your defence over a period of time instead of paying all at once. We design each payment plan to fit individual clients to ensure you are able to afford the legal services you want without being concerned that it wont be affordable. We do not charge interest on our payment plans.
Our lawyers have pushed for successful outcomes in many cases with a variety of charges and circumstances. If you schedule a free 30-minute consultation with one of our lawyers, we can discuss what outcomes you can reasonably expect based on the facts of the case. Even if an acquittal seems unlikely we may notice that some of the key evidence against you is inadmissible for violating your Charter rights, or the Crown may be willing to lower the charges to a non-criminal offence if you’ll plead guilty to that lesser offence. There are plenty of options we can pursue. While you are waiting to meet with us take a look at these past successes to see the sorts of strategies and outcomes we’ve used in the past for a variety of charges.
