The end of law is not to abolish or restrain, but to preserve and enlarge freedom. For in all the states of created beings capable of law, where there is no law, there is no freedom.” – John Locke

Hi, my name is Jaspreet. I am a legal assistant at Aitken Robertson. I am a Law Society of Ontario candidate and I have successfully passed the Barrister and Solicitor licensing exams.

While pursuing my law degree in India, I became well versed in the principles of advocacy, interpretation of statutes, family law, criminal law, principles of public international law, alternative dispute resolution, industrial law and other areas of law. I participated in State-Level Moot Court Competition and organized various National-Level Moot Competitions. I carried out extensive legal research, identified complex legal issues, applied legislation and regulations to hypothetical problems, conducted examinations, wrote opening and closing statements, and drafted legal memorandums.

After completing my law degree in India, I obtained a paralegal graduate certificate from Georgian College, in Barrie, Ontario. This one-year accelerated paralegal program provided me with valuable insight into the Canadian legal system. I participated in mock trials, negotiations and mediations. With hard work and persistence, I was able to pass my NCA tests (which are the accreditation tests for foreign trained lawyers) and lawyer licensing exams in less than one year while working as a full-time legal assistant at a prestigious immigration firm. I also completed various distance learning courses to keep myself abreast of the latest developments in the law.

Now, I am working at our Belleville office as an articling student. I am also volunteering at the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Canada. My goal is to become a criminal lawyer and make my parents and brother proud of me!

Outside of the office, I enjoy reading books, writing poems, watching Netflix, working out in the gym, and playing sports. When I was in school, I was a national-level triple-jumper. I have participated in around 50 tournaments for various sports and athletics.
